In Kindergarten, we were inspired to create our own Stripes of All Types mural after reading this great book by Susan Stockdale. We studied each illustration, and then got right to work designing sea creatures for our undersea wall mural. Artists used oil pastels to create their designs, and had to replicate a part of their design on a small 2" x 2" square. These small squares were mounted on the right side of our mural, and offered an interactive experience for everyone that viewed the mural.
To prep for this lesson, I created the undersea background, and made copies of hand drawn sea creatures for artists to choose from. Students who finished early (even students from other classes) added algae, coral, mermaids, submarines, etc to complete our mural.
At our school, we strive to encourage service work among students and staff alike. At the time that we were creating this mural, a member from our school community wrote me to ask if our students could create something special for a sick little boy named Idan. Once I mentioned this to my Kindergarten artists, they unanimously voted to donate the mural to Idan! I Modge Podged the entire piece to help it last, and the mural was delivered. Idan and his family were thrilled to have something so beautiful to keep them entertained while Idan recovered from surgery.
