In Kindergarten, the class was starting a unit on owls. I searched around and found this great lesson on pinterest. We started by watching an animated reading of Owl Babies by Martin Waddell on YouTube. We studied the illustrations, and talked about how the artist added highlights and how the artist created texture.
This project has lots of steps and materials to gather, so I took my time with the demonstration and triple checked for understanding. First, artists used sponges to create a tree branch for their owls to rest on, and a moon to light the night sky. We used different sides of one sponge to cut down on clean up. While the paint was still wet, artists added white to the top sides of the limb for highlights. They then collected 10 cotton balls to make three owl babies for their picture. Finally, artists were given six yellow squares to cut into circles for the eyes, and three orange squares to cut into triangles for the feet. Finally, artists added googley eyes to each owl, and used small round sponges to print snowflakes in the background. Artists who finished early added more detail.
Set up of materials with labels
(Side note: This was the first time I left a set up for another class out in the middle of the table. It worked great, and I will definitely do this again to save on set up time)
