Fauvist Portraits

After seeing my daughter's teacher present a Fauvist Portrait lesson, I was inspired! I decided to combine my own Henri Matisse unit and our school's yearly theme of "Going BOLD" to create these amazing Fauvist Portraits to display at our annual Gala.

After studying the planes of the face, and having a discussion about how color can be used to create BOLD designs, we got right to work creating collage paper. This is always a crowd pleaser:) We used everything from brushes to sponges to rollers to create texture on our collage paper. One half of the tagboard paper was colored with black and white paint, while the other half was colored with either warm or cool colors.

Once the paper was dry, I gave a demonstration on how to use templates to trace and cut out each facial feature. I also demonstrated how to create a powerful and symmetrical design by placing color shapes on the black half of the face and black shapes on color half. Each artist was encouraged to add as much detail as possible, and to use excellent craftsmanship when cutting and gluing pieces. The final portraits are incredible, and do look like our 4th Grade artists!!
