Rainbow Fish
This was a great way to start the year in Kindergarten and 1st grade. I began by reading, Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale. This story has a great moral about how hurtful words can do real damage. After having a class discussion about the book, I explained my "No Put Down Zone" rule for the studio, and how we all need to help make the art room a safe place to create.
I traced the fish outline on drawing paper and gave each student a few strips of colored construction paper to tear to pieces. I encouraged them to create a pattern with their torn pieces, and to fill the whole fish shape with "scales". The fish were finished with some crayon, glitter, and a googly eye.
