After studying the graceful and impressive paintings at Lascaux, I challenged my artists to create their own cave paintings on crumpled brown paper. Students were encouraged to include at least three animals and one symbol in their paintings. Students also emulated the great cave artists of Lascaux by outlining their images in black tempera paint or charcoal, and by signing their paintings with a handprint. Students used natural colors to enliven their paintings, and some even constructed a painting tool out of natural material i.e. grass, pine needles, dried flowers etc. The classes loved touring the actual cave online via the official Lascaux site, and one student's grandfather came in to tell us about his visit to the original cave in the late 1950’s. It was an exciting journey from start to finish!
